Founded in 1989,EJIis a non-profit organization thathasset outto change the narrative about race inAmerica.Theirimpact nowextends beyond the legal representation work on which it was founded intomultimediaprojects,publicspaces,andinteractiveexhibitionsthataddressAmerica’s pernicious past inthe global slave trade and its lasting effectsonourcountry’s history and today’s society.Thousandsofpeople travelmonthlytotheLegacy Museum,theNational Memorial for Peace andJustice,andthenewly openedFreedom Monument Sculpture Park,collectively known as The Legacy Sites.In 2021,design was provided for a 2.5 acre public park in downtown Montgomeryadjacent to the LegacyMuseum.The park wasconceived tocreate anopportunityfor visitors togather,process,and reflect onthe emotions and knowledge gained fromexperiencing the variousfacilities.The site would also provideoverflow museum parking and act as a central hub for organization’s tour operations.In 2022,the plazaopenedallowing forlarger groupsto the Legacy Museumto gatherandprovidingthe opportunity forindividual reflectionin the communal space.
